This might not be the right thing for you. In fact, according to the stats, there’s a 95% chance it’s not.
For most publishers, unless you enforce a paywall, it’s unlikely that readers will voluntarily contribute. Despite receiving and opening our newsletters every morning for free, it just won’t be on the radar with the majority of readers that could or would pay for this service we call journalism. As a regular reader, you’ll know that paywalls aren’t Daily Maverick’s thing. The news should be accessible to all whether you can pay or not. In fact, we’ll even go as far as to say:
We’ll never erect a paywall.
There you go. We said it. It’s in writing and we’re stubborn so we’re never going to go back on it.
Why that matters:
Over 250,000 people read an article last week about whether schools should remain open. It was a perfect example of how the most important aspects of our society are currently being challenged. Our job is to make sure relevant considerations of the biggest debates are fairly reported and analysed. Our journalism provides the details so that when you’re engaging with your child’s school or deciding what’s best for your family, you’re armed with the facts. And counterviews. When the pandemic hit, our reader numbers surged. The public wanted solace from the noise and misinformation on social media; instead they came directly to us because Daily Maverick’s journalism is synonymous with the truth.
So who is likely to join our cause?
One day, great minds will look back on Covid-19 and analyse the behaviour of our species. There will probably be significant questions about the bread-baking and the TikTok dances but they’ll also likely note the following: the majority of people did nothing. Not everyone has the facilities or capabilities to help; not everyone has the will to stand up and take action; not everyone rolls their sleeves up and says “I’m in” even if the odds are against them. It is the few that change the world for the many. Over 12,000 Maverick Insiders already support our cause because they see the essential nature of it. Will you join them? And us.
